Sofya is conducting an ethnographic study of public spaces in Astoria, Queens, where she focuses on formation and contestation of norms, as well as cultural adaptations of new immigrants.  She is completing her first book, Immigrant Citizens: The whys and hows of naturalization, and what it means for immigrants and the United States.  Sofya holds a PhD in Sociology from Princeton University.  She has written on citizenship in the US and Canada, role of race and ethnicity in political incorporation of immigrant groups, and European migration flows.  Her work has appeared in Ethnicities, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Social Science Quarterly, and Citizenship Studies, as well as in two edited volumes.
